UC Celebrates Fall Graduates

The University of Cincinnati will confer 2,343 degrees to 2,265 students during its fall Commencement ceremonies Dec. 9-10.  

All ceremonies will be held in Fifth Third Arena and are expected to each last about two to three hours. Doors open 90 minutes prior to the ceremonies. Immediately following each ceremony, the Commencement Office and the UC Alumni Association host a reception for all graduates and guests at the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center. 

Doctoral Hooding and Master’s Recognition Ceremony

Graduates check in at the Armory Fieldhouse. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and check-in closes promptly at 9:30 a.m.

ABOUT THE GRADUATES

The December 2016 graduating class of 2,265 students hails from 48 states and 49 countries. Master’s degrees will be awarded to 945 of the graduates and 91 students will earn doctorate degrees. 

Fourteen percent of the graduates — 316 students — are first-generation college students. Women comprise nearly 57 percent of the class. The average age of all graduates is 28, with students ranging from 19 to 77 years old. 

Numbers of those receiving Latin honors: summa cum laude (grade point average between 3.9 and a perfect 4.0) 343; magna cum laude (GPA between 3.75 and 3.8999) 377; cum laude (GPA between 3.6 and 3.74999) 284. 

CEREMONY DETAILS  

  • Each graduating student will be able to invite up to six guests. No tickets will be needed to attend the ceremony. Seating is general admission; first come, first seated.

  • The Family Friendly Zone in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center is an alternative location to view Commencement via simulcast. It is intended especially for individuals with limited mobility, small children or special needs, but is available to everyone.

GETTING TO UC

HONORARY DEGREES 

UC will bestow two honorary doctorates, its highest award, during the December commencement ceremonies.

James E. Schwab, a longtime member of the UC Foundation Board of Trustees and the former president and chief executive officer of Greater Cincinnati nonprofit Interact for Health, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Commercial Science.  

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey will be presented an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts.

In the tropical paradise of Costa Rica, fourth year journalism and international affairs student Stephanie Rivera embarked on an unforgettable journey of self-discovery and cultural immersion. Leaving behind the familiar sights and sounds of Cincinnati, Rivera set out to study abroad for a transformative semester in this Central American country, rich with vibrant biodiversity and cultural heritage. The College of Arts & Sciences (A&S) at UC places great emphasis on encouraging study abroad and experiential learning opportunities for its students. Recognizing the transformative power of global experiences, the college supports a variety of study-abroad programs that enable students to enhance their academic pursuits while gaining valuable cultural and personal experiences.
