CCM Announces Fall 2017 Schedule of Major Events

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) presents more than 100 major public performances this fall as part of its yearlong Sesquicentennial Celebration. The largest single source of performing arts events in the state of Ohio, CCM's Fall 2017 Performance Series runs

Established in 1867, CCM will spend the 2017-18 performance season looking back on its history as one of the country’s oldest conservatories, celebrating the careers of its impressive alumni and faculty, and looking forward to the artistic futures of its incredible students!

THEATER OF WAR
Theater of War is an innovative public health project that presents readings of Sophocles’ Ajax, an ancient Greek play about the suicide of a great and respected warrior, as a catalyst for facilitated town hall discussions about suicide, combat stress, substance abuse and the impact of war on families. For the past five years, this groundbreaking project has been used to open up powerful dialogue on military installations and in communities worldwide. The University of Cincinnati’s production of Theater of War is being sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Department of Classics, the CCM Harmony Fund: Challenging Hate and Prejudice through Performing Arts, the Taft Center, the A&S Dean’s Office and the Helen Weinberger Center.

The Indonesian gamelan – a predominantly bronze percussion ensemble comprised of gongs, metallophones and other instruments– has had a long entanglement with the discipline of ethnomusicology from its foundational moments to the present. But ethnomusicology is only one of several networks of circulation, including colonial administration, cultural diplomacy, educational ideology and prison rehabilitation, that have facilitated the movement and reinterpretation of the ensemble and its music outside of Indonesia. In this lecture, Maria Mendonça explores the ways in which the ensemble and its music has been reimagined and localized in Britain, drawing on her recent ethnographic film project Gamelan Encounters (2017).

THE EARTH IS FLAT

The CCM Sesquicentennial celebrates the work of accomplished alumnus Todd Almond (BM, 1999)! A love letter to the University of Cincinnati written by Almond, The Earth is Flat explores the universal awkwardness of the American college experience. The search for identity by those least prepared with answers resonates with unexpected comedy in this new play commissioned by CCM Acting as part of the Cincinnati Playwrights Conference in 2016. A coming-of-age story set in Calhoun Hall, The Earth is Flat follows purple-haired Ethan as he takes his first tentative steps toward self-knowledge.

THE NEW COLOSSUS: MUSIC OF AMERICAN IMMIGRANTS

The New Colossus (1883) by American poet Emma Lazarus has been inscribed on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty since 1903. It was often the first sight seen by the millions of people who immigrated to the United States from war-torn Europe in the 20th century. CCM’s Wind Ensemble celebrates some of the great composers amongst those American immigrants, who have contributed what are now cornerstones of the wind repertoire. This performance is dedicated to the remarkable legacy of Karel Husa.

A WISDOM OF MUSIC
Scott Murphy, University of Kansas School of Music
Earlier this year, Harvard professor Mihir Desai published The Wisdom of Finance, which demonstrates how certain economic structures parallel humanity’s timeless struggles and aspirations as encoded in works of culture. One of those structures is the set of incommensurable preferences: citing Martha Nussbaum’s The Fragility of Goodness, Desai finds this set embedded in notions of what makes for a good life. In this talk, Murphy demonstrates that this set also undergirds many stylistic aspects of Western classical tonal music, in direct contradiction to a prevailing trend in music-theoretical research. From this perspective, defaults such as major-minor tonality and four-part textures emerge as solutions.

CCM’s Department of Dance opens this anniversary season with a concert of mixed repertoire featuring the enchanting The Little Mermaid choreographed by guest artist and Missouri Ballet Theatre director Adam Sage with music by Léo Delibes and Antonín Dvoràk. The concert also showcases Paquita (Act II) with music by Ludwig Minkus, restaged by Deirdre Carberry. Additional highlights include the world premiere of Shaker Loops, choreographed by André Megerdichian and featuring music by John Adams performed by CCM’s Café MoMus ensemble. This premiere will also include illuminated projections by DAAP faculty member Henry Hildebrandt.
