UC fashion students transform button-up shirts into new designs

Students in the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) recently collaborated with international clothing brand GANT on a project that inspired creativity and innovative design thinking.

The project grew out of GANT’s Never Stop Learning mission, inspiring students in DAAP's Myron E. Ullman School of Design to think outside the box and reimagine the classic button-up shirt in new, inventive ways.

GANT donated 90 shirts for Assistant Professor of Practice George Sarofeen’s draping class to redesign. Each student chose two shirts and in two weeks created a new garment that still highlighted the original shirts’ design details. The students and professors voted on their favorite garments, which were displayed in the DAAP Cafe for public vote. The top designers had their looks professionally photographed on models. Their garments will be on display in DAAP through April 27.

"Working with GANT shirts was truly rewarding and beneficial to the Fashion Program students," says Sarofeen. "GANT's belief in the DAAP Myron E. Ullman School of Design provided us this chance to collaborate with their company, giving students a tremendous opportunity to explore their creativity as designers and create garments that are manifestations of our constant focus on sustainability in the fashion industry. It was a true pleasure for the students as they had a fun learning experience."
