The African American Cultural and Research Center, once just a dream, will be celebrating its 10th anniversary throughout the 2001-02 academic year.
The first event in that yearlong celebration will take place Monday, Sept. 24 - 10 years to the date after the center's grand opening. The anniversary kickoff will begin at noon at the center with re-enactment of the ribbon cutting, refreshments and African drumming music. Eric Abercrumbie, the center's director since its opening and UC's director of Ethnic Programs and Services, will be the master of ceremonies. Admission is free.
While the yearlong observance will focus on the past during fall quarter, it will focus on "The Present: Where We Are Now" during winter quarter and "The Future: Where We are Going" during spring quarter.
Other fall quarter events include:
- Friday, Oct. 12 - A presentation with Dr. Na'im Akbar, faculty member at Florida State University's psychology department, 6 p.m. in the Event Pavilion. Akbar is a speaker who provides African-centered analysis of the issues affecting African Americans and humanity. Free.
- Saturday, Oct. 20 - AACRC participation in "Third Annual Walk As One." This six-mile journey will raise money for The National Conference for Community and Justice and the National Underground Railroad Museum and Freedom Center. The walk begins at Yeatman's Cove on Sawyer Point.
- Sunday, Nov. 18 - An AACRC Choir Concert at Kresge Auditorium on East Campus. Free.
