African American History Month: Events

A series on race and culture, a poetry reading featuring an acclaimed African American poet and a presentation featuring the Rev. Damon Lynch III of Cincinnati are among the events university organizations are sponsoring for African American History Month. Unless otherwise noted, admission to each event is free and open to the public.

Tuesday, Feb. 5
8 p.m. - lecture in Race and Culture series, with Gerald Vizenor¸ professor of Native American literature at University of California-Berkley, Room 127, McMicken. Topic: Native American Survivance. Sponsored by UC English department. Information: 556-3905.

Wednesday, Feb. 6
2 p.m. - public dialogue in Race and Culture series, with Gerald Vizenor and English professor Amy Elder, Elliston Room, Langsam Library. Topic: Native American Literature as Culture. Sponsored by UC English department. Information: 556-3905.

Tuesday, Feb. 19
8 p.m. - lecture in Race and Culture series, with India-born novelist and naturalized U.S. citizen Bharati Mukherjee, Room 127, McMicken. Topic: Apple Pie Redefined: Race, Culture and American Values in the Age of Terror. Sponsored by UC English department. Information: 556-3905.

Wednesday, Feb. 20
2 p.m. - public dialogue with Bharati Mukherjee and Suvir Kaul, director of the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Elliston Room, Langsam Library. Thursday, Feb. 21
9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. - Student Services will show a documentary of Malcolm X on the anniversary of his death, Comnination Room 2133-2203, French Hall. Information: 556-1663.

Friday, Feb. 22
8 p.m. - Elliston Poetry Reading with Nikki Giovanni, the author of more than a dozen books of poetry, Zimmer Auditorium. Information: 556-1570. Admission is free and open to the public.

Saturday, Feb. 23
9 a.m. - UC's Upward Bound program will hold its annual Upward Bound Black History Month Celebration, Room 601, Old Chemistry building. Spencer Crew, director of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, will be keynote speaker. Music, praise dancing, recitations and an oratorical contest with Upward Bound students. The audience will consist of Upward Bound students and their parents. Information: 556-1626.

Sunday, Feb. 24
5 p.m. - Miss Kuamka Talent Showcase, Event Pavilion. Sponsored by UC African American Cultural and Research Center. Information: 556-1177.

Monday, Feb. 25
Noon - Lunch-n-Rap on "Is Your Spirit Awake?" at the African American Cultural and Research Center. Information: 556-1177.

Tuesday, Feb. 26
The College of Law hosts a minority law day program targeted at prospective law students, including high school and beginning college students. Speakers include the college's dean, Joseph Tomain, and Fanon Rucker, a UC College of Law alum and president of the Cincinnati Black Lawyers Association. Other activities include an opportunity to sit in on a mock class, tours of the law school and a Q-&-A session. Information: 556-6805.

Wednesday Feb. 27
