Hungry UC employees, faculty and students now have a new place to grab a quick bite. The Campus View Cafe in University Hall opened this week for breakfast and lunch.
The new eatery, located on the fourth floor of University Hall (Room 460), opened Tuesday, March 20, to a steady stream of customers, according to Rick Roberts, manager, right. The café is primarily intended to serve the 500 employees who work at University Hall as well as students, faculty and staff from surrounding buildings such as Procter Hall and the Vontz Center for Molecular Studies.
Campus Services held a contest at University Hall to name the restaurant. The winner was Joe Herald, left, a worker in the purchasing department and former director of procurement at University Hospital. As the prize, Herald and 19 friends were treated to a private lunch at the café by the Rehabilitation Services Commission of Ohio, the agency that operates it. Four other University Hall employees came so close to the winning name that they were given a free lunch, too: Gary Greinke, Lori Stiles, Bruce Lipper and Darlene Parrillo.
According to Vicki Rogers of Campus Services, the cafe will be open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday. Breakfast hours are 7-10 a.m., and lunch hours are 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The menu includes egg biscuits, bagels, muffins and fruit for breakfast, and soup, salads, pizza and hot and cold sandwiches for lunch. Orders may be called in or faxed in advance. The phone and fax number are the same: 558-4642. In the future, catering service will also be available.
Without the cafe, University Hall staff members have had limited options for lunch. Kingsgate Conference Center has a bistro next door, but Vine Street is far enough away that it usually requires driving. "A good number of the employees have been walking down to Veteran's Hospital for lunch or having to drive somewhere," says Paul Michaud, associate vice president for Human Resources.
