The University of Cincinnati Digital Press (UCDP) gets high praise in the January 2002 issue of CHOICE, a publication that reviews materials for the nation's academic libraries. The January issue features CHOICE's annual list of outstanding academic titles, and includes a review of the UCDP's revised edition of George Catlin: The Printed Works. The review of the revised edition, featuring the CUrator software that was created by the Digital Press, suggests the two-disc set "demonstrates the serious commitment of the University of Cincinnati Digital Press to maintaining and improving quality scholarly CD-ROMs," and that the publication is a "...powerful tool for the study of George Catlin's printed images and texts about Native American peoples and the trans-Mississippi West of the early 19th century."

The Digital Press converts rare documents and images of Western American history into an electronic format to preserve them and to make them accessible for research and instruction worldwide. The Catlin collection was the first venture ever published by the Digital Press, first in 1998 and then with the newly developed CUrator software in 2000. Catlin dedicated his career to recording the disappearing Native American culture in both paint and print, revealing the people, customs and traditions of different tribes as he traveled the North American continent through the 1830s.

The new CUrator software integrates images, texts, maps and supplemental information. "One of the great things about the software is that if you have more than one research collection, you can search more than one research collection simultaneously, and that was what we wanted to accomplish, building a larger and larger database," explains Alice Cornell, UCDP assistant director and editor-in-chief.

The two-disc Catlin collection sells for $499. Additional publications include James Otto Lewis Aboriginal Portfolio: The Complete Edition, released in 2000. Currently in production is McKenney & Hall's History of the Indian Tribes of North America: The First Issue, planned for release in the spring.
