University of Cincinnati faculty and staff will be joining a community-wide effort to help get Cincinnati's children on the path to a college education. They'll be reading to second-graders in the Cincinnati Public Schools Wednesday, April 17, from 10 a.m.-noon, as part of College Blitz Day.
College Blitz Day is an initiative of the University of Cincinnati's GEAR UP partnership, the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and Universities, and the Cincinnati Public Schools. This is the first year of what's planned to become an annual event.
UC faculty and staff will be joining volunteers in 38 second-grade classrooms to read the book, I Know I Can to the second graders. Cheri Westmoreland, director, College Information Center and Educational Talent Search for the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, says the book by author Wendy W. Roulliard was selected because it encourages children to stay in school and to do their best work.
The book uses illustrated animal characters to introduce children to the idea of attending college, and holds special appeal for children who may go on to be first-generation college students -- a population that may not realize that a college education is within their reach. "The earlier we work with students, the greater chance of high school completion and college enrollment," says Westmoreland.
Each second-grader will get his or her own copy of the book, I Know I Can, to take home and share with their parents.
