The UC campus community can now enjoy the
largest green space project ever developed here.
Campus Green
replaced six acres of asphalt with formal gardens, an
international arboretum, and plenty of open space to mingle and
relax. The official dedication is Friday, October 20 and includes
a special architecture and open space symposium in the College of
Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. The symposium,
"Recapturing a Sense of Place: The Transformation of a University
Campus," runs from 2:30 to 4 p.m. followed by guided tours.
Panelists include: Julia Czerniak, assistant professor of
architecture at Syracuse University; Elizabeth Meyer, associate
professor of landscape architecture at the University of
Virginia; and Rodolfo Machado from the Boston design firm Machado
and Silvetti Associates, Inc. Machado designed the Sigma Sigma
Commons tower. George Hargreaves and Mary Margaret Jones of
Hargreaves Associates will also participate. Hargreaves' firm
designed Campus Green, McMicken Commons, University Commons, and
many other open spaces as part of its work on the UC Master Plan.
The symposium will be moderated by author and critic John
Beardsley, senior lecturer in design at Harvard University. The
symposium will be free and open to the public; however those who
wish to attend should make reservations by calling 513-556-2413.
