A grand opening and dedication ceremony for the $3.8 million expansion of the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Child Care Center Oct. 10 gave attendees an open house tour of the new facility.
Sally Wehby, executive director of UC Child Care Center, Inc., says the addition more than triples the size of the center to 20,000 square feet. That allows for growing room for the children served by UC Child Care. Wehby says the center originally served 86 children but will now be able to take as many as 149 children with the expansion.
The east wing houses the infant section with cribs, changing tables and kitchenette to heat up baby bottles and prepare foods, as well as one toddler classroom, two preschool classrooms and a school-age classroom. The lower level has a muscle room where preschoolers can build their motor skills as they run, jump and climb.
The center's expansion was more than 10 years in the planning and supported by a $250,000 gift from Fifth Third Bank's Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund, named in memory of the daughter of Fifth Third's founder, Jacob Schmidlapp.
UC Child Care Center, Inc. is a nationally accredited agency that provides care for children from three months to eight years old. The center serves UC families as well as children in the community.
