Ohio's current education crisis will come under intensive examination over the next month, as the University of Cincinnati College of Law's Civic Forum presents a series of four programs.

The series, "The Future of Public Education in Ohio," will feature prominent guests including Dr. Susan Tave Zelman, the Ohio State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Roderick G. W. Chu, Chancellor of the Ohio State Board of Regents, and UC President Joseph A. Steger. The sessions will be on four concurrent Thursdays, and are scheduled for 7-9:30 p.m. in Room 118 of the UC College of Law. Session topics include:

  • Oct. 25, "The Challenge to Public Education in the 21st Century" - With Dr. Susan Tave Zelman, Ohio State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and a response from Andrew G. Benson, president of the New Ohio Institute.
  • Nov. 1, "The Authority and Responsibility of the General Assembly" - With Rep. Steve Driehaus (D) and Rep. Bill Seitz (R).
  • Nov. 8, "The Role and Importance of Higher Education" - With UC president Joseph A. Steger and Roderick G.W. Chu, chancellor of the Ohio State Board of Regents.
  • Nov. 15, "Community Response" - With a panel of participants who are active in community and educational affairs.
  • "One of the most important issues of public policy facing Ohioans is the question of the kind and quality of public education that we are going to be able to provide to all Ohio children to prepare them for useful and rewarding lives in the 21st century," says former Ohio governor John J. Gilligan, director of the Civic Forum program. "The question, with all of its ramifications, deserves the widest and most intensive public discussion, which should begin now."
