It was ten years ago when a UC Clermont student had a tough decision to make, spend his limited resources to repair his only transportation to school and work or pay his tuition. That's when the late Jim Sauls Sr. stepped in and organized an event to make certain that the young man and many others like him wouldn't have to face that tough decision again.
Hundreds of students have taken advantage of the Stay in School Fund since 1991, receiving small interest free loans to help bridge the gap in their finances. The process is simple, stop by Financial Aid and complete paperwork, take the approved forms to the Development Office and within a few days receive the funds. The needs vary, tuition money until financial aid arrives, new glasses, basic living necessities and of course, car repairs. The money doesn't, it is there for the students. The students are asked to repay the money when their financial crisis is over, with more than 40% repaying their loans in full.
The Stay in School event has evolved over time to become the biggest fundraiser in Clermont County. More than 1000 people attend the event, this year on May 11, at the Oasis Golf Course and Conference Center. The theme is 2001 Arabian Nights and it promises to be an exotic venture into food, fun and fund raising for a good cause. One of the biggest draws is the spectacular silent auction, that last year raised more than $20,000. The attendees will have more than 300 items to choose from in such categories as Children's toys, Home and Garden and Get Away Packages The most popular are the pizzazz packages, groupings of many wonderful items that would make a great gift for someone special, or a treat for you.
Tickets are still available and may be purchased by calling the UC Clermont Marketing and Development office at (513) 732-5293. Costs are $40 per person or $400 for a table of ten. The festivities start at 5:30 and include dinner, beverages and dancing and of course knowing that you helped someone stay in school.
The goal for the 2001 Stay in School Fundraiser is $50,000 with a portion of the monies going to the Clermont County MRDD Board.
