A significant change in traveling UC's West Campus will greet Spring Break returnees on Monday, March 26, with the permanent closure to vehicular traffic of Campus Drive between McMicken Hall and the West Campus Bookstore.
The section of Service Drive running between TUC and Nippert Stadium will also be closed.
Construction for TUC renovation and other MainStreet projects mandates the closures. The Campus Drive change directly affects on-campus parking, pedestrian traffic and UC shuttle service.
Campus Drive will terminate with a turnaround at the north end of McMicken, near Braunstein Hall. Parking in front of McMicken will be restricted exclusively to handicapped parking. Vehicles without the proper handicap decals will be denied access to the parking area. The amount of Zone A parking on Campus Drive will continue to be limited.
For questions about changes in parking, call Parking Services West Campus information number at 556-2283.
New limits on pedestrian access will also go into effect on March 26. For a map that shows access routes for pedestrian traffic on campus, check out http://www.uc.edu/mainstreet/springmap.pdf
UC's East-West campus shuttle service will be rerouted because of the road closure.
The Main Gate stop next to the university's entrance at Clifton Avenue and Straight Street will be maintained, with the shuttle then traveling up to the Campus Drive turnaround. A shuttle stop will also be located at that turnaround.
The shuttle will then turnaround and exit campus via the bottom half of McMicken Circle. It will proceed north on Clifton Avenue to east on Martin Luther King Drive and then south on Woodside Drive at the university entrance between the CBA and Langsam garages.
A second change in the shuttle's routing will take place at that point. To avoid congestion with the three Bearcat shuttles that turnaround at the West Campus Bookstore, the East-West campus shuttle will no longer stop at the bookstore. Instead, it will turn east off Campus Drive before reaching the bookstore and onto the Campus Green Drive that runs between the CBA garage and Lindner Hall on one side and the Myers Alumni Center and Campus Green on the other. A new shuttle stop will be established on the sidewalk next to the Alumni Center's parking area
The shuttle will then proceed back onto Martin Luther King Drive and pick up its normal route. Shuttle pickup times are not expected to be affected by the changes, according to Diana O'Connor, assistant director of Grounds, Moving and Transportation in Facilities Management. For questions about shuttle service, contact her office at 556-4147.
Revised provisions for fire and other emergency vehicle traffic to reach buildings around the construction zone have also been made, according to Gene Ferrara, UC assistant vice president and director of public safety.
Campus visitors in vehicles who arrive at the Main Gate entrance will be redirected to campus garages.
