Cincinnati - Ohio's teacher colleges are working together to measure how the state's new accountability standards for teachers will bring success for their students.
During a back-to-school news briefing, UC Education Dean Larry Johnson announced a five-year study focusing on Ohio's 50 public and private teacher education programs. The study will be launched this fall to examine the connection between the performance of new teachers and the performance of their students.
Funding for the study totals $250,000 with contributions from the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio Board of Regents and Procter & Gamble. The research team is in the process of contacting foundations to raise up to five million dollars in additional funding.
The University of Cincinnati College of Education will serve as a coordinating center for the collection of data, but the research will be conducted among all Ohio public and private institutions that prepare teachers and the funding agencies. Lawrence J. Johnson, UC Dean of Education and co-chair of the Ohio Task Force for Accountability in Teacher Education, is one of the leaders of the statewide research team.
The first report is expected in July 2002.
