Engineers Celebrate E-Week and College Centennial

Cincinnati - The UC College of Engineering has a special birthday-themed Engineers Week planned for 2001, as the college celebrates its centennial with a weeklong party.

Starting at noon Monday, Feb. 19 and ending with a banquet at Music Hall Saturday night, Feb. 24, UC engineering students, faculty and alumni will pay tribute to the college where cooperative education was founded and numerous everyday inventions were developed.

A brief schedule of events for E-Week 2001 follows:
penny boat contest

Monday, Feb. 19th
Event: Penny Boat Competition
Location: McMicken Commons near Tangeman University Center
What: Student teams built foil boats to see which boat can hold the most pennies without sinking wins the competition. The Engineers Week competitions continue throughout the week, including charitable events such as a Blood Drive and Canned Food collection.

egg carton plane contest

Event:Egg Carton Airplane Contest
What: Student teams competed in designing and testing airplanes built from egg cartons, floating them from the 5th floor of Zimmer to targets on the 4th floor auditorium lobby.

Tuesday, Feb. 20th
Event:Tug-of-War Contest
Time: 2-3 p.m.
Location: Nippert Stadium

Wednesday, Feb. 21st
Event: "Birthday Blowout"
Time: Noon to 1 p.m.
Location: Engineering Research Center
What: Relay races with a birthday theme. The first team to complete the course and blow out all the birthday candles wins.

Event:Birthday Cake-eating Contest
Time: 3-4 p.m.
Location: Engineering Research Center Lobby (4th floor)

Thursday, Feb. 22nd
Event:Centennial Speakers Series
Time: 1 p.m.
Location: Room 427 Engineering Research Center
What: "Jet Engines, Flying Cars and Oil Well Drilling: Going With the Flow" by Eminent Scholar Ephraim Gutmark, aerospace engineering.

Event:"Order of the Engineer" Ceremony
Time: 7 p.m.
Location: Room 427 Engineering Research Center
What: Senior engineers will participate in a ceremony which includes engineering's version of the "Hippocratic Oath."

Friday, Feb. 23rd
Event: Engineer-a-cake Contest
Time: Noon to 1 p.m.
Location: Room 427 Engineering Research Center
What: Students will have to decorate a cake using an engineering theme. Faculty will judge their creations.
