The Office of Information Technologies (UCit) has opened a Faculty Technology Resources Center (FTRC) in Room 3300 Edwards Two. The center will eventually move to Zimmer, but staff and resources are available now to help UC faculty and students.
"Initially the FTRC will focus mainly on Blackboard support for instruction as we continue to promote its widespread adoption. Macintosh and Dell workstations will be available, equipped with software for producing multimedia material for classroom use," said Molly Gordon, director of Education Services for UCit.
UCit staff will help faculty get started with basic multimedia, including PowerPoint presentations, and with using all of the features of Blackboard. This help is a logical follow up to the initial training provided on West campus by the Libraries and on East campus by AIT&L. It will provide specific, one-on-one consulting support as faculty use and apply these tools to their own teaching.
Equipment in the FTRC includes scanners, printers, a digital camcorder, a media converter, a portable projector, and a Polycom portable videoconferencing system. Staff of the FTRC can provide or arrange one-on-one or small-group training by request on basic and advanced Blackboard topics, and on use of the equipment and software.
"In the coming months, we anticipate hiring additional staff for the center who will have previous experience helping faculty use technology, and special expertise in multimedia technologies and instructional design," said Gordon. "UC faculty will have ample opportunity to provide input about the resources and services we offer, and to participate in workshops, seminars, and one-to-one consulting."
In the fall, the FTRC will move into newly remodeled space in Zimmer Hall. The permanent facility will provide expanded space and a greater variety of equipment, software and services, and possibly longer hours of operation.
The center is now open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 556-1602 for more information or assistance, or drop by the center and check out the new facilities in person.
