The first group of freshmen who will matriculate under the new General Education program began classes fall quarter. Ann Twinam, chair of the General Education Coordinating Committee, says the committee is now working on plans for assessment of the program. The committee is at work developing overarching guidelines for assessment and will be meeting with the college-based committee during the winter quarter to continue assessment plans.
Twinam says the Coordinating Committee also is fine-tuning the Breadth of Knowledge coding on more than 11,000 undergraduate courses, work that had the committee examining 600 pages of printouts during the winter and spring quarters last year. The coding will help students plan courses that fulfill General Education requirements as well as contribute toward their undergraduate degree.
The committee has sent the official General Education program to faculty, as well as a letter explaining they have until 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16 to raise any concerns they have on coding of their courses with their unit head. The courses can be checked by clicking here.
The coding for the courses will be listed in future Learning Opportunities catalogs as well as the course listings web site, according to Lynn Barber, university registrar.
