Ohio Governor Bob Taft got a run through of UC's innovations in distance learning June 14 as the governor toured the UC Center in Warren County. Taft joined a videoconferencing hookup with UC President Joseph A. Steger who was at the distance learning site in Zimmer Auditorium on UC's main campus.
The governor's tour was to highlight the state's One-Stop Centers that provide both training and educational services. The Warren County site at 300 East Silver Street is reputed to be one of the best in the state, and UC is a key partner at the location, providing up to 25 classes per quarter.
Governor Taft checked the microphone that he used to speak with President Steger, and could see and hear the president via a video/phone line hookup. Taft remarked about UC's growing outreach into Warren County and also mentioned UC's growth in the Addiction Studies program, which provides a bachelor's degree to students who take distance learning courses from six other community colleges across the state of Ohio.
Lawrence Anthony, academic director of addiction studies and social work, says a seventh institution, Washington State Community College in Marietta, Ohio, also has just entered into an agreement with UC to provide the distance learning degree.
