Daniel L. Grafner has been named executive director of the University of Cincinnati Foundation. He will also serve as vice president for development for the University of Cincinnati. Grafner, associate to the dean of Ohio State University's Max M. Fisher College of Business, was hired following a nationwide search.
"This is a real privilege for me, not only to build upon the successes of the past, but to take it forward," Grafner said.
Associated with the Fisher College of Business since 1989, Grafner directed a $100 million fund-raising campaign and was key manager of the $20 million naming gift directed to the college, as well as 20 additional seven-figure gifts. Over the years at OSU, he supervised fund-raising in several professional colleges including law, engineering, education and social work.
"Mr. Grafner brings to UC an outstanding track record, and the capability to direct fund-raising here to a new level," said UC President Joseph A. Steger. "The success of the recent $328 million 'Campaign for UC' indicates that greater successes lie ahead as we position the university for economic stability in a changing financial environment."
The sentiment was echoed by James C. Kautz, chair of the UC Foundation trustees.
"The University of Cincinnati has always provided an excellent education at moderate cost," Kautz said. "Now, with declining income from public sources, it is especially important to encourage our friends to support the University of Cincinnati as we transform our Foundation. Dan Grafner has the professional background and skills we need to progress to the next level."
Fund-raising, Grafner said, should be closely tied to university values.
"What makes us successful is the focus on academic excellence. The work of faculty in their research, interaction with students in the classroom, and their service to the community provides us with an important story to share with the alumni and friends of UC," he said. "My job is to take the story and work with the president, foundation board, donors, faculty leadership, and volunteers to make this university an even better place through the generosity of the many stakeholders who believe in our mission."
Grafner formerly worked at Ohio Northern University and Bowling Green State University.
Grafner will begin work on May 1.
