At a March 19 luncheon in the Annie Laws Drawing Room, eight seniors from Hughes Center High School for Teaching and Technology met with Dean Lawrence J. Johnson and were awarded $1,000 scholarships to the UC College of Education.
Johnson said the funding for the scholarships was from College of Education awards specifically earmarked for Hughes students, as part of the college's commitment to its partnership with the high school in the Cincinnati Public Schools district.
The scholarship recipients are Rosa Burke, Cynthia Pitcher, Amber Hillman, Loretta Roberson, Prince Johnson, Aaron Groomes, Shanel Spaulding and Latosha Williams.
The College of Education also has a three-year-old "Reach to Teach" partnership with the Hughes program, funded through a $50,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Education. That partnership works to increase the number of minorities in the teaching profession.
Hughes Center's High School for Teaching and Technology is a magnet program for students interested in careers in teaching or educational technology.
