The University of Cincinnati opened its doors and Internet channels for a digital town meeting Wednesday, Oct. 11 to help kick start Greater Cincinnati's New Economy.

A panel of IT leaders shared their plans and ideas for taking advantage of existing talent and nurturing new IT talent to support a wide range of New Economy enterprises.

The panelists included:

  • Dan Meyer, President and CEO of Copernus, Inc.
  • Johnathan Holifield, Vice President for New Economy Enterprise at the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce
  • Todd Ward, Ernst & Young
  • Fred Siff, Vice President for Information Technology at UC

Working through cincinnatifastbreak.com, a larger group has spent the last ten weeks looking at issues related to education, investment, governance, and other factors which affect growth in a digital economy.

The streaming video webcast was produced by Tom Streeter, director of the UC Streaming Video Project, with assistance from CCM electronic media senior Jeff Van Kirk

"The university is the only organization in the region that could deliver this kind of product," said Siff, explaining why UC was chosen to host the digital town meeting. "This also demonstrates our commitment to the project."

Although all of the panelists agreed that a long-term effort is needed, Holifield noted that "We're also looking for some quick wins for the city. We want to get us in the game immediately."

"Progress starts with a clear vision and a clear identity," said Meyer of Copernus. "Cincinnati doesn't have that with IT yet."

During the webcast, Meyer proposed holding a citywide event to attract more attention to the IT base here, taking advantage of programs such as itworks.ohio, and supporting the Ohio Board of Regents IT guarantee plan.
