Olympic diving champion, author and dog trainer Greg Louganis will deliver a lecture at the University of Cincinnati from 8-9:30 p.m. Friday, May 17 at Zimmer Auditorium. The lecture, titled "Beyond Breaking the Surface," is free and is open to the public.

Greg Louganis

Louganis' first book was titled Breaking the Surface. He announced in 1995 that he was HIV-positive when he competed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and cut his head on the diving board at the games. At UC, he is scheduled to speak for 45 minutes and then open the room to questions. He has appeared as a motivational speaker at college campuses across the country.

It's the college age group and younger that appears to need the reinforced message of protection against AIDS. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that each year, half of the HIV infections in the United States occur in people under age 25.

Louganis' appearance is sponsored by the UC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Alliance, Student Government, Greek Week and the UC Wellness Center.
