Miniature books, some of them so small they could be lost forever with a sneeze, hold more of a charm for collectors than readers. One of the world's leading authorities on miniature books will be the guest speaker at the first of the University of Cincinnati 2002-2003 University Libraries Lecture Series, to be held Thursday, Oct. 10, from
3-4 p.m. in the UC Archives and Rare Books Department, Room 808 of Blegen Library. The event is open to the UC community.
Michael Garbett, owner of Michael Garbett Antiquarian Books of Almondsbury, England, will describe just what a miniature book is, and why some are so rare, which can increase their value into the thousands of dollars.
Garbett, a member of the Miniature Book Society, is in Cincinnati as part of the 20th Miniature Book Society Grand Conclave, an annual gathering of the society's worldwide members and officers. The society was founded in Ohio in 1983. His UC lecture will include a display of miniature books.
Garbett's UC lecture is sponsored by University Libraries and the Friends of University Libraries.
Garbett will have many miniature books on display as well as on sale at the Miniature Book Society Book Fair on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 1-5 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel Cincinnati Riverfront in Covington, Ky. The book fair is open to the public.
