CLARENCE MCLAIN, MD
Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology
According to one estimate, Clarence McLain has taught more than half of the physicians in practice in Cincinnati. While most clerkship directors use the position as a stepping-stone to other career opportunities, Dr. McLain has continued as the director of Medical Student Education for 35 years at UC. That makes him the longest-running clerkship director in the nation, according to the Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics. McLain developed a curriculum to teach medical students and residents how to maintain a human-based approach to patient care despite advances in technology and forces that have tried to depersonalize it. He seeks to teach students about the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and to teach them excellent communication skills. A Saturday morning breakfast and open forum on current medical issues, held at his home, is one of the most well-received approaches he employs with his students. His nominator sums up: "He has recognized that the professional relationship is based on honesty, integrity, trust and being responsive to the needs of the patient."
