University of Cincinnati students are breaking in their dancing shoes for a 12-hour marathon to be held from 9 p.m. Friday, May 17, to 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18, in the UC Event Pavilion (next to the Alumni Center). The dance marathon, sponsored by the UC student organization SparkPeople Campus, aims to raise $6,000 as part of the local Children's Miracle Network fund-raiser to benefit children with serious illnesses.
UC SparkPeople Campus founder Mindy Giehls, a senior marketing and international business student and Honors-PLUS student, says the UC marathoners hope the fund-raiser will treat up to 30 local Miracle Network children to a Sept. 15 Cincinnati Reds game, and the children will be joined by the UC dancers and the children's families. "They will get to meet the players, get some autographs and one lucky child will even get to throw the opening pitch," says Giehls, a 1997 graduate of Lebanon High School.
Giehls says SparkPeople Campus became an official service organization on UC's campus about one year ago, branching from Giehls' work with the nonprofit Cincinnati organization, SparkPeople Campus Service. "The mission of this organization is to help students, low-income individuals and children develop leadership skills."
The growing organization has 15 members from several UC colleges. Giehls adds that each of those members has raised more than $50 for Friday's fund-raiser. Students are asking for about $5-$10 from individual sponsors. All of the money raised will go directly toward the Miracle Network trip to the Reds game.
The marathon will feature dancing, food, entertainment and prizes. The dance marathon has numerous sponsors, including SparkPeople Service, MainStreet, LaRosa's Pizza and Friday Night Live.
