The move to Cincinnati will be a homecoming of sorts for the new University of Cincinnati Dean and University Librarian. Victoria A. Montavon, University Librarian for Wright State University, will become dean of UC's University Libraries Oct. 1. UC Senior Vice President and Provost for Baccalaureate and Graduate Education Anthony Perzigian announced Montavon's appointment this week.
Although Montavon was raised in Portsmouth, Ohio, she was born in Cincinnati and lived here until she was five years old. It was UC's reputation for excellence that brought her back. "I was attracted to the University of Cincinnati for many reasons, but at the top of the list are the university's widely respected research mission and its impressive record of building outstanding research-level library collections and resources. I am drawn by the challenge of meeting the understandably high expectations of the students, faculty, staff and other users of the University Libraries."
Montavon is actively involved in the development of the Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK). UC is a founding member of the award-winning consortium that provides a wide range of electronic resources for its users and links the collections of 76 Ohio university and college libraries, and the State Library of Ohio. Montavon chaired OhioLINK's Library Advisory Council in 2000 and serves on the coordinating committee that creates and develops future services for this super library, second in size nationally only to the Library of Congress.
"OhioLINK is an extraordinary program that makes it possible for Ohio's university and college libraries to leverage their buying power far beyond the ability of any single library. OhioLINK provides powerful support to research, teaching and learning throughout the state," says Montavon.
Since 1996, Montavon has served as University Librarian of Wright State. She was formerly University Librarian of Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia (1990-1996). She also has held library positions at Rider University, Temple University, Lindenwood College, Carlow College and Notre Dame College of Ohio.
"Dr. Montavon brings a wealth of experience and talent to the position," said Perzigian. "Her professional experiences and accomplishments in the areas of technology planning, instructional programs and community outreach are extensive. Through her leadership, the roles and responsibilities of University Libraries will expand and University Libraries' services to students and faculty will grow commensurately."
