Richard S. Newrock Named Dean of College of Applied Science

Richard S. Newrock has accepted the appointment of dean to the University of Cincinnati College of Applied Science. The news came in an announcement from Anthony J. Perzigian, UC Senior Vice President and Provost for Baccalaureate and Graduate Education. Richard S. Newrock

Newrock's appointment becomes effective April 1. The 59-year-old Newrock had been serving as interim dean of the college since July 2000. His previous experience at UC includes serving 13 years as head of the physics department in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences from 1982-1995. He first joined the faculty in 1973 as an assistant professor of physics. He was promoted to professor of physics in 1984.

Born in New York City, Newrock earned his bachelor of science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York in 1964; his master's degree from Rutgers University in 1966; and his PhD focusing on experimental condensed matter physics from Rutgers University in 1970. He spent three years as a post-doctoral Fellow at Cornell University. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has published numerous research articles. He has been an invited lecturer around the nation and the world.

Founded in 1828, the University of Cincinnati College of Applied Science, originally the Ohio Mechanics Institute, is the oldest technical college west of the Alleghenies. The college prepares students for fields in engineering technologies, including mechanical engineering, computer science and construction management. The college was named by Engineering News Record Magazine as one of the top places in the country to study construction.
