UC Begins Student Information System Replacement Project

University of Cincinnati Interim President Santa J. Ono and other senior leadership today

kicked off

the Student Information System Replacement Project.

That project, now in pre-implementation phases, is essential to the ongoing success of the university.

The student information system is the main tool that supports services for students. Students apply, register, receive advising, create academic plans, request and receive financial aid, monitor academic progress and more by using the student system, and they have high expectations for usability and access.

Students begin to interact with the system as prospects and applicants to the university. They use it extensively while working toward degrees, and the engagement continues through their lives as alumni.

Faculty and advisors use the student information system to monitor progress and record grades, as well as integrate their efforts with learning management tools such as Blackboard.

The university currently uses a self-developed system, UniverSIS, which has ably met the university's needs for more than a decade. Now, new SIS technologies are available that will support the complex and evolving information system needs of students, faculty and administrative units.

President Ono stated, "This new system will be designed to enhance the student, faculty and advising experience, as well our ability to know where we are financially in relation to tuition, fees, room and board. It represents a major investment in our infrastructure to meet the needs of the future."

If funded by the Board of Trustees in 2013, the SIS Replacement Project will be a long-term effort lasting about five years.

The first phases of the project focus on collection and analysis of work needs, marketplace alternatives, readiness assessments and more.
