Ceremony Honors Six Workers, Two Teams

You might not expect a parking attendant, a photographer, a housekeeper, an administrative assistant, a building services manager, a medical teacher, a moving crew and a team of technology experts to have much in common. This afternoon at UC, an awards ceremony showed that these 23 workers do indeed share something significant: a deep commitment to giving quality service.

Their dedication has earned them something else they now share. Each is now the winner of the President's Quality Service Award, presented for the first time today during "Celebrate UC" at Corbett Auditorium. The festivities invited UC employees to come together to celebrate the university, its world-class achievements and the staff members who help to make it a success.

Again and again in the nomination letters that describe the honorees and their approach to work, co-workers made it clear that despite the diversity in occupations, the winners do share some characteristics. Words like "outstanding," "dedicated," "diligent," "respectful," "caring," "upbeat," "hard-working," "energetic," "unfailingly helpful," "quiet but effective" and "enjoyable to work with" kept getting mentioned. As President Joseph A. Steger noted in his opening remarks at the ceremony, these are workers "who go out of their way to do things right."

As their reward, each will be awarded a cash prize by the UC Quality Service Initiative - $1,000 for each individual and up to $2,500 for the teams.
