Background on Jose Rivera

Born in Puerto Rico and now based in Los Angeles, Rivera is regarded as an important voice in contemporary drama. According to Jenckes, his plays are filled with both power and poetry, and touch on issues of environmental, moral, social and political decay in modern society.

Rivera's visit has been arranged by the Helen Weinberger Center for the Study of Drama and Playwriting, an interdisciplinary program of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences and the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). The center was launched in 1990 with visits from playwrights Edward Albee and Michael Weller. Center activities are funded by a generous endowment from Helen Weinberger, a Cincinnati philanthropist and lover of drama.
