UC's Department of Surplus Equipment Management is gaining a reputation as one of the city's "best kept secrets." It's a bargain hunter's paradise.

Need an inexpensive used desk, some chairs, file cabinets or shelves? Surplus Equipment Management has all this and much more. Pricetags will be at their lowest of the year on Saturday, Oct. 5, as the department holds its Annual Clearance Sale and Auction.

When: Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: First floor, Campus Services Building (the Old Sears Building), 2900 Reading Road, at the corner of Reading Road and Lincoln Avenue. The entrance is in the rear of the building (Winslow Avenue side) next to the loading dock, at the sign that says Campus Services Building, Surplus Equipment Management.

Items for sale: Offers items for 50 percent off the regular weekly public sale prices. Desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, bookcases, storage cabinets, typewriters, fax machines, computers, monitors, lab equipment and much more. Prices start at about 50 cents or $1 for assorted small office supplies and go up to about $125 for computers.

Items for silent auction: Items from Unclaimed Lost and Found (jewelry, watches, calculators and more). Bidding will be open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. High bidders will be notified on site (if present) or by phone for payment and pick-up that day or Sunday.

Customer pick-up: Purchasers may pick up on Sunday, Oct. 6, from noon to 3 p.m. and Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You may also take your items home with you right away. Or you may call ahead at (513) 556-5654 to arrange your pick up time.

Other sales requirements: For the annual sale only, payment will be accepted by cash, checks and money orders.

Trivia: The makers of the movie, "Traffic," came and bought stuff for their sets.

Weekly sales: On Oct. 31, Surplus Equipment Management will resume its Weekly Public Surplus Sale, which is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays. The prices will, of course, revert to regular public sale prices. On weekly sales, only checks or money orders are accepted.

Outreach to community: 90 randomly-selected United Way agencies have been invited to the "Annual Donation Days" following the annual clearance sale on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7-8 to take advantage of any of the remaining items, free of charge for use at their agencies.
