The following statement was released today University of Cincinnati President Joseph A. Steger to the University community today in reaction to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the UC response.
To: The University Community
From:Joseph A. Steger, President
Yesterday, reeling from shock at the horrific attacks on New York
and Washington, the University of Cincinnati was called upon to respond in a
variety of ways. Many of our faculty helped the news media understand the
meaning and context of the tragic events. Others acted to ensure the safety
of our students here and abroad. Many parents and relatives contacted the
University for answers and assurance. Citizens, looking for a way to help,
turned to the University's blood center.
In many quiet ways the University provided necessary service in a time of need. I offer my thanks to everyone who contributed to this effort.
Today, the University's flags are at half-staff in rememberance of
the victims and their loved ones as we contemplate the unimaginable tragedy
of these events. We understand that our community extends far beyond the
campus boundaries and that yesterday's horrors, although seemingly distant,
affect us here.
Throughout the University community, people will be affected
in different ways, and I ask you to respond with compassion and
consideration for their needs.
In the future, no doubt, we will be called upon to help others
again. Today we need to be responsive to our own.
Thank you.
