Ohio Gov. Bob Taft will present this year's William Howard Taft Medal for Notable Achievement, the highest honor given annually by the University of Cincinnati Alumni Association. The prize is named for Taft's great-grandfather, who was a UC alumnus, 27th U.S. President and Chief Justice.
The 2002 UC Day Banquet will open with cocktails at 6 p.m Wednesday, April 24, in the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center, 151 Goodman Ave. Dinner will begin at 7 p.m.
This year's Taft Medal winner is Candace Kendle, who holds a doctorate and a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from UC. She is the chairman and chief executive officer of Kendle International Inc., a Cincinnati-based provider of global drug research and clinical testing services for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Kendle, a resident of Indian Hill, has also led a distinguished career in pharmacy education.
Since 1963, UC has presented the Taft Medal to alumni who have made noted achievements in their fields of endeavor. Past recipients include international businessman and philanthropist Peter Woo, tennis star Tony Trabert, internationally acclaimed architect Michael Graves and medical researcher George Rieveschl, inventor of the first effective antihistamine.
Three other awards will be given at the UC Day Banquet, which dates back to 1907. Reservations are $75 per person. For reservations, call the Alumni Center at (513) 556-4344 by April 17.
