The University of Cincinnati joins 49 other institutions across Ohio today in releasing the results of its Praxis II test series, the licensure exams for students in teacher preparation programs. Colleges across the nation are making this information public as part of the 1998 Title II amendment to the federal Higher Education Act.

UC's teacher education program, the Cincinnati Initiative for Teacher Education (CITE), is a partnership between the College of Education and the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.

"The UC pass scores range from 90 to 100 percent. The average pass rate was 97 percent. I was so pleased with the scores, and this data reflects the hard work of our students and faculty," says Lawrence J. Johnson, Dean of the College of Education.

Institutions must report the pass rates of each teacher licensure exam taken by 10 or more students who completed teacher preparation programs. The reports must also contain the number of students enrolled in the program, the average number of hours of practice teaching performed by the student, and the faculty-student ratio.

Ohio's institutions will report their data to the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), which will compile a statewide report for the U.S. Department of Education in October. Data from all 50 states will be included in a federal report on the quality of teacher preparation. That report must be delivered to Congress by April 7, 2002.

In addition, the State of Ohio will launch an annual Ohio Report on the Quality of Teacher Education in September. This report will use Title II data to rank Ohio's 50 teacher preparation institutions as High Performing Institutions, Performing Institutions, At Risk Institutions or Low Performing Institutions. Johnson is co-chair of the 25- member task force that is coordinating this report with the ODE.

"Ohio is a leader in teacher accountability, and the state's report card will link the accountability system to the accreditation process. We have worked very hard to develop a rich system that will demonstrate those exceptional teacher education programs and provide others with information to improve, says Johnson."
