RE: Title IX Anniversary Events
I invite you to join in our continuing celebration of the 30th anniversary of Title IX. Title IX is the groundbreaking legislation that opened up opportunity for women in our classrooms, in our faculty ranks and on the playing field.
Today, UC is a national model for its advancement of women in athletics. Moreover, the numbers of female students in our professional schools has increased dramatically since the passage of Title IX. For example, in 1972, 13 percent of our law school students were women. Today, 56 percent are women. Female students in engineering have grown from 1 percent to 19 percent in the same period.
Still, there's more work to be done and we are taking a thoughtful look at Title IX in a series of talks during the next two weeks. They are all open to faculty, staff, and students; please encourage your colleagues to attend.
