The State of Ohio has asked the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati to coordinate an expanded Summer Youth Employment Program, and UC quickly stepped forward to help as well.

The Urban League hopes to find jobs for 3,000 Hamilton County teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18. UC will be one of the largest employers, pledging to find 100-150 positions.

"We were very excited when we heard UC was going to participate," said Betty Atwater, director of the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati. "The campuses are near many neighborhoods we serve. It's a safe environment. Parents love that."

In fact, Atwater said many parents of students in UC's Upward Bound academic program have already asked to be placed in jobs at UC this summer.

Alecia Trammer, director of UC Employment Services, will coordinate the placement of students at UC. She said the benefits of working here extend far beyond the salary and on-the-job training.

"Kids need to have someone in front of them," said Trammer. "It's something to brighten their world, so they can experience a university environment. It will help broaden their interests and focus their goals on college."

Atwater agreed that the UC jobs are likely to have a long-term impact on the students hired. "There's such a need for this program in terms of a learning experience. They'll be in a university environment thinking 'This doesn't exclude me. I can do this.'"

George Wharton, director of UC's Office of Equal Opportunity, and Paul Michaud, Associate Vice President for Human Resources, are also working with the local Urban League to get the positions advertised and filled quickly.

The big kickoff for the Urban League will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 19th at Taft High School. The Youth Employment Fair 2001 will provide one-stop job shopping for eligible youth 14-25. Everyone needs to bring a picture ID, birth certificate and Social Security card. Teenagers under 18 must bring a parent as well. More information is available at www.cycyouth.org or by contacting Clark Lucky at the Urban League at 513-487-6535.

Can You Help?

The state funding covers the complete cost of hiring a teenager for the summer at $5.15 per hour. Students can work up to 30 hours per week, and prospective employers can stipulate some minimum skills (e.g. typing ability) if necessary.

Any department interested in participating in the program should fill out a job description, and send it to UC Human Resources by Friday, May 25.
