UC is on the march in search of social justice.
Mitchel Livingston, vice president for Student Affairs and Human Resources and the originator of UC's Just Community effort, is calling on the university of community to come together for a special fund-raising event Saturday, Oct. 20
The event is called "Walk as One," and Livingston hopes UC will have more representatives than any other company or institution in Greater Cincinnati.
He challenged UC's newest students at Convocation, asking them to help achieve his goal of 1,000 marchers from UC.
"Their mission is almost identical," said Livingston. "Their goal is to create a just community in the city of Cincinnati. I felt we needed to adopt this as a university."
Livingston said he approached UC President Joseph A. Steger with the idea, and Steger supported the concept enthusiastically.
"We want this to become an annual university event to promote Just Community," said Livingston. "It's even more poignant given the April violence and recent terrorist attacks."
Cincinnati had the largest participation in last year's national Walk as One event. Livingston is hoping for even better results this year.
"It allows the university to come together as a family. It's a community experience, walking together."
There will be three lead coordinators, helping to organize volunteer captains and marchers. Tom Hadley, associate vice president for SAHR, is overseeing the staff effort. Linda Cain, associate provost, will work with the West Campus community, and Roger Guard, assistant senior vice president, will coordinate the East Campus effort.
UC will provide free bus transportation to the walk and back to campus, along with T-shirts for all walkers.
"What a wonderful way to get involved in a very safe and affirming way," said Livingston. "We're making it very easy to participate."
He also noted it's a way to make a positive step forward away from the violence of April and Sept. 11th.
"The timing of this couldn't be better. People are going to be carrying their emotions for awhile."
