Classes begin at the University of Cincinnati Sept. 25, but around 3,500 new students will get acquainted with the campus and each other when UC's Welcome Week is held Sept. 20-29. UC's Welcome Week features an arts kickoff with a world-famous performance artist and a free invitation to watch one of UC's most-talked about football contests of the year, even though it's a virtual sellout. New students will also be "pinning" on a new tradition at Convocation. Here are the highlights:

Friday, Sept. 20

  • Noon, residence halls -- Students move in.
  • 9 p.m., residence hall lobbies -- UC's initiative to promote alcohol-free entertainment, Friday Night Live, will host an ice cream social in the residence halls.

    Saturday, Sept. 21

  • 3:30 p.m., Paul Brown Stadium -- UC vs. OSU football game
  • 3:30 p.m., Nippert Stadium -- For those who didn't get tickets to the game, the Greek honorary society, Phi Rho Chi, invites the UC community to watch the UC/OSU game on the JumboTron in Nippert Stadium. The event is free and open to students, faculty and staff with a valid UC ID. Members of UC's fraternities and sororities are encouraged to wear their letters and promote UC's Greek organizations. Concession stands will be open.
  • 3-10 p.m., Sigma Sigma Commons -- TKE Fest 2002 will feature four live bands, carnival games and food and begins with a campus tailgate party from 3-6 p.m. Sponsored by UC MainStreet, Mars Music, E-Campus Books, the Ohio National Guard and Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. The ceremony will have a dramatic ending as a 48' X 48' banner is raised. This is the third year for the student banner tradition to reflect UC's Just Community initiative. It's made from 192 individual flags the students designed at orientation, to reflect their idea of a Just Community. Students will also begin a new tradition as they receive their first UC pin to symbolize that they are members of the UC family. Parents, siblings and other family members of new students are invited to attend Convocation.
