Students {float: right; margin-left: 0.5em}What are effective assessment strategies that support and potentially drive learning? Several different forms of assessment can be successfully used in PBL courses. You might favor a student survey that quantifies perceptions of cognitive, behavioral and affective goals for learning. Peer evaluations are also a good way to invite the learner to participate in the assessment process. Workshops that bring outside observers into your “classroom” can serve the dual purposes of generating collegial enthusiasm about PBL and providing diverse and objective viewpoints. Of course, qualitative instructor evaluations are often used in conjunction with a rubric of learning outcomes. And, a reflection paper or journal is a great way for students (and teachers!) to individualize and internalize the classroom discoveries. This section describes these tools and strategies along with others and advocates the use of several assessment methods simultaneously.
