Action Research in the PBL Classroom: Participants will examine the basics of classroom action research which can be used to evaluate the success of PBL implementation and student learning in one's own classroom.
Assessment in PBL: Participants will examine a variety of assessments which can be used to measure student learning of content and process.
CET&L September Institute PBL Track: Week-long introduction to PBL and problem writing.
Facilitating Groups I (1.5 hours): Establishing expectations, developing learning climate, forming groups, building a team—involving active participation.
Facilitating Groups II (2 hours): Training in basic skills in PBL group observation (e.g., participation, decision making), facilitation (e.g, responding skills, interaction skills, action skills; group member roles), involving active participation.
Facilitating Groups III (2 hours): Intermediate skills in PBL group facilitation (e.g., encouraging feedback, managing conflict, developing continuous improvement process), applied against case situations brought in by participants.
Getting Started in Problem-Based Learning (2 hours): Brief overview of the PBL process in the classroom. Experience working a PBL problem as part of a group. Participants will begin work on a problem for their own classes.
PBL Brown Bag (1 hour): A general overview of PBL philosophy and practice.
Problem Writing I (1.5 hours): A brief overview of the problem-writing process including a review of writing course learning objectives. Participants will begin work on a problem for a class of their choice.
Problem Writing II (1.5 hours): Participants will share problems they have written and receive feedback.
Using Blackboard 6™ to Support the PBL Process (1.5 hours): Participants will explore a variety of methods for using Blackboard to facilitate PBL group work.
PBL Mentoring Program
This program is designed to provide one-on-one support for faculty who are new to the PBL process. Interested faculty members are assigned an experienced mentor to work with them on all aspects of PBL implementation.
PBL Mentor Classroom Exchange: Mentor will visit mentee's classroom to observe PBL implementation and provide feedback. Mentee may visit Mentor classroom to observe the PBL process.
PBL Q&A's: Steering Committee members meet with interested groups in colleges discussing informally all questions brought by participants.
As the new user of PBL becomes more familiar with the process, s/he may move into the role of PBL mentor.
