The University of Cincinnati Problem-Based Learning Steering Committee Members

Pam Bach, MLS, is the Coordinator of Info Commons at Langsam Library and collaborates with librarians in Instructional Services to develop information literacy workshops, incorporating elements of problem-based learning.

Stuart Blersch, PhD, is Professor of English in the Center for Access and Transition of the College of Applied Science. He has been using problem-based learning in his courses for several years and has attended and presented at PBL conferences. He was a faculty participant in the 2003 PBL Pilot Project and has been active in his college-based PBL Team.

Linda Brown, PhD, is Professor and Department Chair of Humanities, Media and Cultural Studies in the College of Applied Science. As an original member of the PBL Steering Committee, she has attended and presented at PBL conferences and facilitates the CAS PBL Team. She is part of a PBL faculty learning community which accompanied students to England during Autumn Quarter, 2004.

John Bryan, PhD, is Associate Professor of English (professional writing) in the College of Arts & Sciences. An original member of the committee, he has been using forms of PBL since 1989. His professional writing courses often have students develop solutions to problems provided by real clients (such as DuPont, the Taft Museum, the Kidney Foundation, the UC Genetic Counseling Program, among many).

Jane Carlin, MLS, MS, is Senior Librarian and Head, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning Library - University of Cincinnati. She has served as head of the libraries Training and Educational Services department for several years developing a variety of workshops and training programs for students, faculty and staff. She has planned and developed the new DAAP library facility and is a contributor to the OhioLINK Digital Media Center.

Margaret Cheatham, MBA, is associate professor of Information Systems at Raymond Walters College in the Department of Business and Economics. She employs problem-based assignments for collaborative groups in her classes, and is continually exploring ways in which technology can support students and faculty engaged in PBL coursework. She facilitates the RWC PBL Learning Community, and has presented professionally at the state and national levels on Problem Based Learning and technology tools for faculty.

Robert K. Conyne, PhD, is Professor and Director of the Counseling Program at UC (CECH). He is an original member of the University PBL Steering Committee. His main contribution has focused on providing "group skills in the classroom" training and consultation to faculty members who are experimenting with PBL and other active learning instructional strategies. He uses PBL in his graduate counseling courses and was responsible for oversight of the PBL Pilot Project.

Ellen Cook, PhD, is Professor of Counseling in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services. She is an original member of the UC Problem-Based Learning Steering Committee, has presented at PBL conferences, attended the University of Delaware PBL Institute and uses PBL in her graduate counseling courses.

Wayne Hall, PhD, is Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Professor of English & Comparative Literature. He employs problem-based assignments for collaborative groups in his literature classes and is the administrative liaison to the UC PBL Steering Committee.

Tracy Herrmann, MEd, is Associate Professor of Radiologic Technology and Chair of the Allied Health Department at the University of Cincinnati, Raymond Walters College. She has presented professionally at the state and national levels on Critical Thinking Assessment, Primary Trait Analysis, and Problem Based Learning. In addition to serving on the PBL Steering Committee, she is the General Education Representative for Raymond Walters College.

Carl A. Huether, PhD, is Professor of Biology in the College of A&S. He is an original member of the PBL steering committee participating in the Samford University International PBL Conference, University of Delaware PBL Institute, University of Delaware International Conference on PBL in Baltimore.

Ellen Lynch, EdD, is Associate Professor of Early Childhood Care and Education in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services and is the faculty coordinator of PBL efforts at UC responsible for UC strategic planning, identification and dissemination of PBL related information to UC faculty via faculty listservs, grant applications, and implementation of UC faculty training and ongoing consultation in PBL. She has used PBL extensively in her own classes and has consulted on the use of PBL in diverse higher education settings within the United Kingdom. She is a topical editor for the University of Delaware PBL Clearinghouse.

Susan Polich, MEd, is Assistant Professor, Clinical and Director of Clinical Education for the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences in the College of Allied Health Sciences. She currently employs PBL in two classes—an interdisciplinary course in health care ethics and an evidence-based practice course for physical therapy graduate students. She has attended the McMaster University four-day workshop on PBL.
