Abstract Preparation and Submission Instructions

Abstract Preparation

One abstract is required for each presentation. The abstract may not exceed one letter or A4 page and may include one table or one figure or one piece of artwork. The text length of the abstract is 250 words maximum and prepared in MSWord or equivalent software that we can adjust for printing purposes, if necessary. One inch (25 mm) margins are required with Calibri 12 pt font if available and, if not, Ariel plain 11 pt font. The title comes first, followed directly by the list of authors and their affiliations. The presenting author's name should be first and underlined. The email address of the presenting author should be given last. Abstracts will be accepted after February 1, 2009 and up to March 23, 2009. The Organizers suggest the later date as better, since progress toward the presentation will be further along. See and follow the format indicated on the next page, including the bold and italics indications. At the bottom of the page indicate your preference for a poster or a talk. The Program Committee will make the final decision regarding the type of presentation.

Submitting an Abstract

Abstracts must be submitted electronically via email attachment. Send your abstracts to joseph.caruso@uc.edu . Upon receipt, you will receive an email return indicating that we have received it. This should happen in a few days, at most. If not, contact Joe. A later communication will indicate whether the submission has been accepted and whether it will be a lecture or a poster.

An example Abstract in Calibri 12 pt font with one inch (25 mm) margins is shown below and the Microsoft Word template can also be downloaded [Click Here]. Please format yours in this fashion so we will have a consistent appearance in the abstract CD. ISM 09 holds the copyright on this sample text and artwork and no permissions to copy any or all parts will be given.

Heavy Metal Analysis of Heavy Weight Ceramic Materials: Applications from Flower Pots to Flotation Interrupters; David Koppenaala, Gary Hieftjeb, Herb Shrinerb; aW. R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, Richland, WA 99352 USA; bDepartment of Chemistry, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN 47405 USA; david.koppenaal@pnl.gov

This presentation will focus on an exciting new development in the field of ceramics, all made possible through careful, accurate, precise, concise and statistically overdone heavy metal analyses via ICPMS. While lighter weight ceramics have been the recent rage, serious gardeners and homemakers have found the whole business off-putting in that, who needs the lightweight ceramic pots that blow over in the slightest breeze, making a real mess for them and a bonanza for P&G Household Products Inc. On the other hand, Pacino Brothers, Ltd. has already ordered 100,000 pairs of the Flotation Interrupters (sometimes referred to as "cement shoes"), claiming: these little babies easily overcome the overstated and over-rated buoyancy theories that have gained such credence over the past 2,000 years. Further, because of the well designed abrasive interior, toenail samples for metalloproteomic analysis become readily available upon shoe recovery prior to any reuse. Indeed! In this presentation we highlight the analytical developments made possible by the Koppenaal team, shown here at work.
