When Daniel Kalb first started considering college, he didn't really want to follow in the footsteps of his siblings. Brother Donnie Kalb graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in health promotions in 1999. His sister Mandy earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from UC. Daniel, valedictorian of Wynford High School in Bucyrus, Ohio, was thinking of breaking with tradition, but ended up coming here to stay when he competed in the first Cincinnatus scholarship competition in 1997.
"I remember the night before the competition, I was in a sectional basketball tournament for my high school. After the game, I went to Cincinnati, stayed overnight and went to the competition the next day. I thought it was really cool, a no pressure thing. I really liked the team-building aspect of it."
Daniel was awarded a full Cincinnatus scholarship and met his future UC roommate at the competition. He's graduating with his bachelor's degree in business marketing and management and has the added honor of being selected as a marshal.
The 22-year-old UC graduate says one of the things he'll remember most about UC is performing community service, as part of his Cincinnatus award.
"I worked at a runaway shelter, a school for MRDD kids, and a homeless shelter. It puts a lot of things in perspective. I'm thankful for everything I have."
"I always want to give back. This year I've kind of been doing it on my own, like picking up trash at Burnet Woods. It makes me sick when I see people littering in the water."
Meanwhile, Daniel's learning experience isn't over. He plans to go to audio engineering school in Arizona, where he'll get a two-month internship in the music industry. "Eventually, I want to go work behind the scenes (of the music industry), producing."
