Cheryl Cates

As an Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati, Cheryl has worked with cooperative education students in a variety of disciplines participating in both optional and mandatory programs. She has been responsible for mandatory co-op programs in the areas of Materials Science and Engineering and Industrial Engineering as well as optional co-op programs for Operations Management, Industrial Management and Liberal Arts. In 1999 she co-authored Learning Outcomes, the Educational Value of Cooperative Education, as a work commissioned by the Cooperative Education Association.

In 2003 she co-authored a chapter for the Handbook for Research in Cooperative Education and Internships and is currently co-authoring a chapter for the International Handbook for Cooperative Education. She has received research grants on the state (OCEA), regional (MCEA) and national (CEA) level to fund her efforts to determine learning outcomes through cooperative education and has presented on the subject of learning at the World Association for Cooperative Education, the Cooperative Education Association, and the Cooperative Education Division of the American Society of Engineering and the Ohio Cooperative Education Association.

She is among the first to become a qualified reviewer for the Accreditation Council for Cooperative Education and is currently serving on the ACCE Executive Board as Vice President – Promotions. She is also an active member of the American Society for Engineering Education, Cooperative Education Division, a member of their Executive Board, and CED Program Chair for 2005.

Within the Division of Professional Practice, Cheryl is a member of the Curriculum Committee and a member of the University of Cincinnati’s General Education Unit-Level Committee. She is currently serving in the role of Associate Director, Pedagogic Development with the responsibility for guiding the Division in the important role of teaching enhancements. She has a Master of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
