Cheryl Cates, PhD




Dr. Cates currently serves as a Professor in the Division of Professional Practice and Experiential Learning at the University of Cincinnati. She has received over $1.2 million in external research funding from a variety of sources, the most significant of which is the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) in which funds devoted to the project totaled $976,529.  She has published three books, the first being a book commissioned by the Cooperative Education and Internship Association entitled “Learning Outcomes:  The Educational Benefits of Cooperative Education”.  The second book resulted from the successful FIPSE project and is entitled “Leveraging Cooperative Education to Guide Curricular Reform”.  Most recently she has published her dissertation, “The Creation of a Large Scale Corporate Feedback System with a View Toward Learning Organizations and Sustainable Change in Higher Education”.  In 2011 she co-authored a chapter within “Higher Education, Emerging Technologies and Community Partnerships”. Earlier chapters Cates has authored are included in “Introduction to Professional Practice”, the “Handbook for Research in Cooperative Education and Internships” as well as “International Handbook for Cooperative Education.”  She has presented her scholarly work in the state, regional, national and international arenas with over 20 papers published in conference proceedings.  She has received research grants from the Ohio Cooperative Education Association, the Midwest Cooperative Education and Internship Association and the Cooperative Education and Internship Association which resulted in successful studies.  Dr. Cates also holds leadership roles as Accreditation Council of Cooperative Education - Chair and Editor of the Journal of Cooperative Education and Internships.
