Academic Internship Program

The Academic Internship Program provides more than just academic credit

Why choose the Academic Internship Program for my internship?

The University of Cincinnati has more than a century of experience in experiential education so we are one of your best educational options if you want to have real world work experience before you graduate. UC Academic Internships are available to all undergraduate students at the University of Cincinnati who are in a major for which co-op is not mandatory.

How does the program work?

Once you reach sophomore/junior status in your program, you will register for a section of Exploring Academic Internships (PD 3000). This course will prepare you for the internship search process as well as give you the tools you will need for success on your internship. Also during this course, you will be exposed to a wide variety of internship opportunites and participate in interviews to determine which internship you will complete.

Once you have accepted an internship, you will work with your internship supervisor and faculty teaching the internship course to complete the reflection and assement exercises designed to help you get the most out of your internship.

Once you have completed yout first internship, you can choose to continue to complete additional internships with your first employer, or throw your hat back into the ring and search for a new internship experience.

Exploring Academic Internships

This course is designed to prepare students to maximize learning through a career related internship; acquaint students with employer performance expectations and assist in the development of the strategies and skills for effective participation in the employment process. Students will participate in the site selection for their internship experience. The course helps students close the gap between the academic application of business concepts and their pragmatic utilization in the workplace. Professionals will discuss career goals, planning, and internships.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will have created an effective resume as well as gained insights into the interview process and the types of behaviors that are most likely to elicit a job offer.
Students will have gained insight into the types of behaviors that are most likely to lead to success in the workplace.
Students will have developed an understanding of the career options available to them as both an intern and as a college graduate

Academic Internship Course

The academic internship experience allows students to investigate the applicability of their studies in relationship to the requirements of a corporate employer in the format of a 15 – 20 h / week domestic or international field experience. The course is reflective in nature, relies on communication with an on-site mentor, as-well-as distance learning based communication with faculty. Students will participate in limited projects and complete tasks that build on skills learned in the classroom.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will use the knowledge gained on their internship to test and clarify career interests and aptitudes.
Students will acquire valuable hands on skill development and learning.
Students will be able to compare and contrast working in teams with working individually.
Students will be able to explain the professional expectations that their supervisor has of them with regard to performing work responsibilities.
Students will be able to explain how their particular job function relates to departmental goals.
Students will be able to complete projects/tasks that will build on the skills learned in the classroom.
