INFORMATION ABOUT OUR DEPARTMENT

The University of Cincinnati Police Department consists of state University Law Enforcement Officers, Security Officers and Civilian Staff who are charged with enforcing the laws of the State of Ohio as well as the Rules and Regulations of the University.  Violations are referred to the appropriate criminal court and/or the University Student Judicial System.

The jurisdiction of the UC Police Department includes all University property under the care, custody or control of the Board of Trustees.  This includes the Clifton West, Clifton East, Raymond Walters, College of Applied Science, and Clermont Campuses, as well as many off campus properties.

Officers provide 24/7 police and security services and are authorized to take reports, conduct investigations and make arrests as necessary.

In addition, there are several mutual aid agreements with the City of Cincinnati that allows both agencies to equally cooperate in law enforcement duties in and around the campus, including a contract to provide security and police services to the University Hospital.

The University Law Enforcement Officers are appointed by the authority of Ohio Revised Code, Section 3345.04 and are certified as Peace Officers by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council.  They are armed and have full law enforcement authority.  In addition, many officers have Master's, Baccalaureate and/or Associate Degrees to augment their knowledge.  These officers also receive regular in-service training in First Aid, firearms, defensive tactics, crisis intervention and cultural diversity, just to name a few.

The Security Officers are appointed to compliment our security efforts. They are not armed, do not have powers of arrest, and provide basic security services.  Some have completed and many are working on Baccalaureate and/or Associate Degrees as well as the completion police academies to augment their knowledge. They also receive regular in-service training in First Aid, defensive tactics, crisis intervention and cultural diversity, etc.

MODES OF PATROL

In the philosophy of community oriented policing, the UC Police Department employs many modes of patrol.  We use the traditional marked police and security cruisers, marked security pick-up trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, segways, and walking beats. Each mode incorporates its own unique quality to the overall goal of service and protection and can be interchanged according to the situation at hand.
