Learn-to-Swim Classes
American Red Cross (5yrs. - 15 yrs.)
Cost: Member $40 / Non-Member $52

There are five levels of the progressive American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program; so that each child may maximize their learning it is it is important that they be enrolled in the correct level. The proper level may be determined in either of two ways:

1. Parent may provide documentation of the most recent Red Cross swim class successfully completed by the child, or
2. The child may participate in a swimming pre-test prior to class enrollment. During the pre-test, the child enters the water with an instructor and is asked to demonstrate water skills with which he/she is comfortable. Skills may range from blowing bubbles (Level 1) to swimming 25 yards front crawl (Level 5). There is no fee for the pre-test and advanced registration is not required; see schedule for dates and times

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills - Leisure Pool
This course marks the formal beginning of the Learn-to-Swim Program. Participants learn beginning water skills which they will build on throughout the program. Some skills taught include front and back floats, opening eyes under water, and flutter kick.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Leisure Pool
Level 2 classes enable participants to achieve success with fundamental skills that include front and back glides, rhythmic breathing (bobs), ability to swim on front 15 feet with simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions, and finning or sculling on back with flutter kick. These are the basic foundations for future strokes.

Level 3: Stroke Development - Lap Pool
The objective of this level is to build on the skills learned in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Participants are introduced to front crawl, back crawl, treading water, diving, safe diving rules, and elements of the butterfly stroke.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement - Lap Pool

This level develops confidence in the strokes learned thus far and improves other aquatic skills. Participants increase their endurance and improve their skills by swimming front crawl and back crawl for greater distances. Participants also continue to build on butterfly and are introduced to elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and turning at the wall.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement - Lap Pool

The objective of this level is to coordinate and refine strokes. Participants work on refining all strokes and increasing their distances. They also learn front and back flip turns.
