5-on-5 Basketball Rules - Winter 2008


Entry Information

  • Registration begins on November 13, 2007.  
  • All registrations must be received by Friday November 30, 2007at 5pm. 
  • Each team is required to pay a $90 entry fee and fill out the entry form.  
  • Entry spots in these leagues are limited and available on a first come first served basis.   
Days of Play
  • League play begins on January 21, 2007. 
  • Games will be played in the Campus Recreation Center. 
  • Tentative regular season, divisional play will be conducted as follows:
    • Men’s Independent – Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
    • Fraternity – Wednesday
    • COED – Sunday, Tuesday
    • Women/Sorority – Thursday
  • Monday through Thursday leagues will be played from 6:30pm-10:30pm and Sunday leagues are 12 noon to 8pm
Rosters
  • Teams may have up to 20 people on their roster. 
  • A player who plays on your team in the regular season is eligible for playoffs. 
  • You cannot add players to your roster during playoffs.
Mandatory Team Representative Meeting
  • Will be Wednesday January 16, 2008 at 5pm or Thursday January 18, 2008 at 5pm in the CRC Classroom . 
  • Any team that does not have a representative at one of these meetings will not qualify for playoffs. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE.

General Information

  1. Responsibilities of the team Captain:
    1. Read and know the rules. Have a team meeting to review the rules.
    2. Control yourself, your teammates and spectators.
    3. Verify the final score after each game. 
    4. Only the Captain may address an Official on matters of rule interpretations. Judgment calls may not be questioned.
    5. Captains must check the web site for their playoff brackets here.
  2. Number of players
    1. Each team may have a maximum of 5 players. Teams may sign up to 20 players on their game roster.
    2. A team may begin play with a minimum of 4 players
    3. See the last page of these rules for special coed rules.
    4. The visiting team is listed on the left side of the score sheet.
    5. Teams that have forfeited one game during the regular season and wish to be reinstated for the playoffs MUST pay the $10 reinstatement fee by Wednesday, February 20, 2008 by 5pm in the Campus Recreation Center Office.
  3. Equipment
    1. Each player is required to wear a numbered jersey or t-shirt, which is not duplicated on her/his team, during the entire game. Teams are encouraged to provide their own jerseys or shirts. Numbers must be at least 5" in height on the front and back of the shirt. Players must be in gym attire, street clothes may not be worn. If both teams have similar color jerseys, the visiting team is required to wear the UC IM-issued jerseys.
    2. Athletic shoes must be worn at all times. The following types of footwear are PROHIBITED from use in the Campus Recreation Center:
      1. All street shoes
      2. "Turf" shoes
      3. Any shoe suspected of marking the floor.
    3. No dangerous apparel or equipment is allowed (e.g., casts, knee braces with exposed metal, hats or jewelry). Players who wear a metal brace are required to cover it with at least a half inch of closed-cell slow recovery rubber.
    4. Players may not wear any headgear such as: baseball hat or bandana. A head band is permitted.
  4. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST PRESENT A VALID UC PHOTO ID AT PRE-GAME CHECK-IN. 
  5. Intramural Basketball is governed by National High School Federation Rules, except where UC Intramural Sports has made adaptations. 
  6. CAPTAINS MUST READ THE INTRAMURAL HANDBOOK FOR POILICES NOT COVERED HERE.

General Rules

  1. The game is played with two teams of (5) five players. A team may start with no less than (4) four. A fifth player may be added until the start of the second half. If at any time a team is only able to field (3) three or less, the team will forfeit the game.
  2. Please BE EARLY! All players are required to check-in with his/her appropriate UC ID to the Intramural Sport Staff prior to the game. Late arrivals must show his/her UC ID before they will be allowed to enter the game. If teams are late, the appropriate penalties will be assessed.
    1. (1-9 minutes = 2 points per minute, 10 minutes = forfeit) 
  3. All players must be a current UC student or faculty/staff member and a member of the Campus Recreation Center. Coop, Raymond Walters and Clermont College students are eligible; however they must pay the Campus Recreation Membership fees. Teams playing with illegal players face possible ejection from the league/tournament. Players attempting to check in with false identification will be suspended for the remainder of the league/tournament and risk the team being ejected from the league/tournament and will face Judicial Affairs sanctions.
  4. Eligibility
    1. Players may play on one men’s/women’s team and a coed team. 
    2. You may not participate on two men’s/women’s teams.
    3. Any Ex-Varsity athlete must sit out one academic year in order to participate in the corresponding sport. 
    4. Red Shirt/Prop 48 players are not eligible to play in a corresponding sport. 
    5. If you have questions please contact the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports and they will make a ruling on any questionable player.
  5. If a player is ejected for any reason, he/she will not be allowed to participate in any Intramural activity until he/she has met with the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports. 
  6. All forms of rules/policies/procedures will apply to all games. Participants are advised to familiarize themselves with all publications.
  7. Official Basketball Rules (Intramural Sports Special Rules & National High School Federation Rules)
  8. Intramural Sport rules, and the Intramural Sports Handbook (available at the Campus Recreation Office or online.)
  9. Intramural Sports and its staff reserve the right to declare any player or team ineligible if rules/policies/procedures are not followed.
  10. Team captains are responsible for the conduct of their players and fans. Teams will be penalized if the captain does not stop unruly or abusive behavior toward Intramural Sports staff, other participants or fans.

Game Play

  1. Players may not wear any kind of jewelry or headwear, including but not limited to: earrings, chains, rubber bands, hats, or bandannas. Head bands will be the only head wear that will be allowed (this does not include the sleeve off of a players shirt).
  2. The game will consist of (2) two halves of 20 minutes each.
  3. The clock will run continuously, stopping only for time-outs, official time-outs, and all whistles in the last (2) two minutes of the second half.
  4. Each team will be allotted (3) three time-outs for the game, (two 30 second and one 15 second) which may be used in accordance with the National Federation Rules.
  5. Teams will reach the one-on-one bonus on the (7) seventh team foul of each half. Personal and technical fouls will be combined to reach the (7) seven. On the (10) tenth team foul, teams will be awarded (2) two shots automatically.
  6. A player will foul out of the game upon committing (5) five fouls. Personal and technical fouls will be combined to reach the (5) five. Technical Fouls count toward your personal foul count.
  7. A team will lose the game by forfeit upon committing its (3) third technical for unsportsmanlike conduct. These include, but not limited to, fighting, taunting, abusive language/behavior towards staff/officials/players/fans and intentional delay of game.
  8. Any player receiving (2) two unsportsmanlike technical fouls for any reason will be ejected from the game. A player may also be ejected without warning by any official or supervisor.
  9. All technical fouls will result in the non-offending team receiving (2) shots and the ball.
  10. Dunking is permitted in the game but not during warm-ups, half-time, or during any other breaks in the game. A technical foul will be issued.
  11. During a free throw for a non-flagrant personal foul, each of the lane spaces adjacent to the end line shall be occupied by one opponent of the free thrower. 
    1. A teammate of the free thrower is entitled to the next adjacent lane space on each side and to each other alternate position along each lane line.
    2. RULE: (Maximum of 3 lane spaces on each side can be occupied). 
    3. Not more than one player may occupy any part of a designated lane space. 
    4. If the ball is to become dead when the last free throw for a specific penalty is not successful, players shall not take positions along the free throw lane. 
    5. During free-throw attempts, players may enter the free throw lane when the ball hits the rim.
  12. If a game ends in a tie, a (3) three minute overtime period will be played. The clock will stop for all whistles. Each team will be given (1) one time-out in addition to any they may have left over from regulation.
  13. If the game is stilled tied at the end of the first overtime, (1) one minute overtimes will be played until a winner is determined. There will be no additional time-outs given during these periods.
  14. MERCY RULE: If a team leads by 15 or more points with 2 minutes left in the second half or if a team leads by 30 or more at anytime in the second half the game will end at that point and the results are considered final.

Coed Adaptations:

  1. Teams must have (3) three men and (2) two women or vice versa. At no time may one gender out number the other by more than one. If playing with (4) four, it must be a 2-2 ratio.
  2. Women’s scoring will be as follows:
    1. Free throw = 1point
    2. 2pt field goal= 3points
    3. 3point field goal = 4points
    4. Men’s scoring will be normal
  3. Men may never enter or break the plane of the free-throw lane.
    1. Penalties:
      1. Man on offense = turn-over, no points allowed if scored.
      2. Man on defense = one free throw to offensive team and offense retains ball
        *EXCEPTION*
      3. When in the backcourt, Males may go through the free-throw lane.  If the ball is stolen while there are men in the lane, all men must immediately show intent to exit the lane.  If intent to exit is not shown, an unsportsmanlike technical foul will be issued.
