Volleyball Rules - Fall 2006

Entry Information
  • To register a team, please come to the Campus Recreation Administrative Suite in the Campus Recreation Center. You must fill out the registration form and pay the $60 entry fee.
  • Registration dates are September 15 - October 3.
  • Space is limited so register early.
Tentative Days of Play
  • Games will be played in the Campus Recreation Center.  
  • Regular season, divisional play will be conducted as follows:
    • Sunday -  Fraternity
    • Monday - Men’s Independent, COED 
    • Tuesday - COED, Men's Independent 
    • Wednesday - Sorority, Women, COED
  • Monday through Wednesdayleagues will be played from 6:30pm10:30pm and Sunday leagues are 4pm-8pm.
Rosters
  • Teams may have up to 20 people on there roster.
  • All players your roster must be a CAMPUS RECREATION CENTER MEMBERS.
    • Full time students are automatically members of the Campus Recreation Center. 
    • Part time, co-op, branch students and faculty/staff must purchase a membership at the Campus Recreation Center to be eligible for intramural play. For membership information please visit the Campus Recreation Center Member Services Desk or online. 
  • A player who plays on your team in the regular season is eligible for playoffs.  You cannot add players to your roster during playoffs. A player may only play on one men’s or women’s team and one coed team.
Mandatory Team Representative Meeting
  • October 8 or 9 at 5pm in the CRC Classroom 3250. 
  • You must have a representative at one of these meetings. 
  • NOTE: Any team that does not have a representative at one of these meetings will not qualify for playoffs.
    • If a team for any reason does not have a representative at one of these meetings they may pay a $20 reinstatement fee and schedule a meeting with the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports to take a quiz on rules and intramural policies and procedures.  Upon passing that quiz you will be reinstated for playoffs provided you meet all other criteria.  The meeting/quiz must take place by October 17 at noon.
Game Rules
  I.  General Rules
  • All play is governed by National High School Federation rules except where Campus Recreation Intramural Sports has made adaptations.
  1. A team consists of 6 players. A team may start with 4 players, but may not continue with less than 4.
  2. Coed - A team consists of 3 women and 3 men or 2 women and 2 men. If there is an odd number, women must out number men (3 to 2 or 3 to 1). Any other combination is not allowed (5 to 1 or 4 to 1).
  3. Club volleyball players may participate on an Intramural team; however, at no time may the make up of the court players be more than 1/3 Club players.
  4. EX-varsity college athletes must sit out one year after they have earned a letter. Please see the IM staff to make sure a person is eligible. If you play with in illegal player you will be forfeited out of the league.
  5. A coin toss (or the like) before the first game will determine which team will serve or have choice of court.
  6. Service and court will alternate for the second game. If a third game is needed, a coin toss will determine service or choice of playing area
  7. If a team forfeits a game, they can erase one forfeit and become eligible for playoffs by paying the $10 reinstatement fee prior to the deadline. Deadline is November 8 at noon.
  II. Game Play
  1. Forfeits are declared with the forfeit policy outlined in the Intramural Sports Handbook. Contests are considered a forfeit if one team does not have at least 4 players signed in and ready to play 10 minutes past the designated play time. Teams will not be guaranteed a warm up time.
  2. A match shall consist of 2 out of 3 games to 15 points, with the winning team ahead by 2 points.
  3. If a third game is needed, it will be played using rally scoring to 15. Every serve is a point.
  4. There is a 50-minute time limit to complete a match.
  5. Each team will be granted one (1) time-out per game. A 2nd time-out is allowed when the score is tied 14-
  6. Time between games will be no more than 2 minutes.
  7. Substitutions may only occur during dead balls. The person who substitutes must go in and out for the same player throughout the game.
  8. A serve must be contacted within 10 seconds after the official’s signal to serve, otherwise a side out is issued. A re-serve will be called when the server releases the ball than catches it or drops it to the ground.
  9. The ball may be served anywhere on the backline between the sidelines extended. It is legal to step on the service line; it is illegal to cross the service line and is considered a foot fault. This results in a side out.
  10. The serving team can only score a point during regular play (not rally scoring).
  11. All served balls must be received with a bump or pass.
  12. Spiking - Any frontline player may spike the ball at the net. Back line players may spike providing contact is made behind the 10 foot line. Once contact is made from behind the 10-foot line, back line players may land on or front of the line.
  13. Blocking - Any player affecting a block may have a second hit regardless of the number of blockers. Front line players may initiate a block only. Reaching a hand over the net on a block is legal provided the ball is not contacted before the completion of the opponents attack and the ball is moving towards the net.
  14. A block may not be attempted on a serve.
  15. If a player touches a ball or ball touches a player, it is considered a play or hit. If 2 players touch the ball simultaneously it is considered as one play or hit. If teammates hit the ball at the same time, it is considered one hit and either player may play the ball again.
  16. Legal contact of the ball is by a player’s body above the waist. The ball cannot visibly come to rest on the player’s hands, fingers, or any other part of the body.
  17. A ball touching any part of the boundary line is inbounds.
  18. It is permissible to run-out-of-bounds to play a ball.
  19. It is legal to step on the centerline when making a play, but not step over it.
  20. A ball may be recovered from the net, except on a serve, provided a player avoids contact with the net.
  21. Multiple contacts are permitted only when the ball rebounds from one part of the player’s body to one or more other legal parts in an attempt to block or save a hard driven spike.
  22. A ball striking the ceiling or an overhead obstruction above a playable area shall remain in play provided the ball contacts the ceiling or obstruction on the side by the team that last played the ball.
  23. At the moment of the serve, all players, except the server shall be within the teams playing area.
  24. After the ball is contacted for the serve, players may move from their respective positions.
  25. Each team is allowed 3 hits of the ball on its side of the net.
  26. Coed - A women must hit the ball at least once if three hits are used in returning the ball over the net.
